Solo Open 22 June 2008

15 brave (or mad) Solo sailors arrived at Hollowell on Sunday 22 June despite the forecast for strong south westerlys. They were not disappointed as the f4/5 coupled with vicious gusts of up to 40mph and shifts tested the most expert helms. Every helm capsized at least once every race and the initial fleet of 15 with 10 finishing the first race dropped to only 4 finishing the second and only 6 starters in the last race. Steve Hall (Hollowell), sailing a Solo for only the second or third time showed how to handle the conditions finishing well ahead of the fleet in the first two races, even catching the lead lasers in the second race after giving them 5 minutes start! Jon Clarke (Draycote) persevered and with a 1st in the last race, which Steve sat out, claimed second spot with a gallant Andrew Smith also from Draycote in third.

Laser Open 22 June 2008

9 Laser home sailors were looking forward to compete against 9 visitors at this year’s Laser Open at Hollowell Sailing Club in Northamptonshire.

The entrants were met by strong South Westerlys, coupled with vicious gusts of up to 40mph. So many of the helms decided to start with Radial or 4.7 rigs, but 7 sailors were crazy enough to try their luck holding on to the Standard rig.

So race tactics were less important and the key to success was “simply” staying upright and riding the gusts. Some of the sailors gave up enervated, even before they got to the first windward mark. But those who were experienced and lucky enough to handle the beats could also enjoy some fantastic scary beams.

The initial fleet of 18 with 12 finishing the first race dropped to only 8 starters in the second race and only 4 finishing the last race.

Steve Harper (Draycote) in a Laser Radial showed how to handle these challenging conditions and won the second and third race after a 3rd place in the first race. So he won overall, followed by David Harper (also Draycote) and John Leech (3rd) and Martin Hudson (4th) from Hollowell.

Spring Pursuit - 22/23 March

Normally this is a two day affair but Saturday conditions were so bad, racing was sensibly abandoned and the result was taken from 2 of 3 races sailed on the Sunday. There were 12 participants in races that were sailed in very difficult conditions with several of us retiring with damaged boats. A great tribute to Roy that he was able to sail serenely through the conditions.

2007 Frostbite

On receiving the Cannon for winning the Frostbite series, Mike Playle thanked the young sailors who had provided him with great competition, and in particular he congratulated Rachel Heggs who challenged hard and came third overall in her Optimist.  Mike commented that the number of young sailors who competed in the series is a healthy demonstration of the ethos of Hollowell Sailing Club.

The final race had sailors cracking the ice to get around the course.  Allan Winters was pipped at the post and finished second place overall.  See the results listed for the full picture.

1st - Mike and Helen Playle - Wayfarer

2nd - Alan Winters - Mirror

Laser Open - 7 July 2007

Solo Open - 7 July 2007

11 visitors joined 8 home boats for the second leg of the inaugural Hollowell - Pitsford Challenge between the Solo fleets of the two clubs over the open meetings on 30 June at Northampton and 7 July at Hollowell. The clear winner was Graham Wilson from Northampton, followed by Ian Hall, Hollowell, Richard Butterfield, Northampton, and Keith Miller, Hollowell. Hopefully this friendly contest will continue in years to come.

Regarding the Hollowell meeting, at long last summer arrived, along with a gusty westerly, always interesting at Hollowell, especially when accompanied by toots and whistles from the Hollowell Steam Rally on the hill overlooking the lake, not to mention the many helicopters making their way to Silverstone. The races each saw a clear division of the fleet between the 4000 series boats disappearing ahead of the 3000 series mainly wooden boats competing seriously at the back of the fleet. The writer sails a 3000 series so cannot say much about events at the front except by hearsay that one R Butterfield obviously did not read the course correctly in race 3 and tried to round the leeward mark to port instead of starboard, causing chaos. During the prizegiving, one C Newton also complained that how could he finish 4th when he had two 2nd places - because you did not win a race was the retort.
Stuart Bush was the overall winner on 3 points, followed by Neil Wilkinson, David Liddington, and Colin Newton, all on 4 points.

Hollowell Rose Bowl - 28 May

Mary Mallard, in a 4.7 Laser rig, was out to defend her possession of the Hollowell Rose Bowl on Bank Holiday Monday 28th May 2007.  In cold, wet and windy conditions, 10 craft braved the elements.  Despite the programme, they sailed a pursuit race, no-one having checked that it should have been handicapped racing!  Mike Playle on his sailboard beat Mary who came second and Roy Richardson came 3rd in his Solo
