Event Report

This annual event sailed in Toppers this year was hosted by Hollowell Sailing Club on behalf of the Northamptonshire Schools Sailing and Canoeing Association. 29 teams of 3 sailors all under 19 attended from all parts of the country. The teams arrived on the Saturday morning ready for a prompt start at 10 am. The strong winds forecast duly arrived and prompted an early decision to halt racing and reef all boats. Despite the winds at times reaching in excess of 30 knots, causing a 2 hour postponement in the middle of the day, 3 rounds were completed on Saturday before racing stopped at 6pm. The leaders overnight were Worcester B, closely followed by Worcester A and Northampton B, all on 100%, using the Wilson Swiss league system. Sunday dawned bright and sunny with an ideal force 3, encouraging proper team racing rather than survival of the fittest. 5 further rounds were sailed leading to semi finals between Worcester A and Magdalene School 1 (MCS1), and Northampton A vs Northampton B. Northampton B easily beat Northampton A, but Worcester took 3 races to overcome MCS1. Despite Northampton’s best efforts Worcester took the final in 2 races.

In addition to the trophies the winners were presented by the Chairman of Daventry District Council with prizes donated by Dinghy Sailing Magazine, Speed Sails, and Rooster Sailing.

Overall results:

Winners of the Britannia Yoke – Worcester A

Top Juniors - Northampton B

Winners of the Lancashire Plate as most improved from the bottom 15 after the 5th round – Derbyshire B.

The top juniors were presented with a new Trophy consisting of a Topper as a plaque laid into a wooden frame. This was created by a Hollowell member – Peter Jackson and donated to the NSSA.
