Iced Tankard Handicap Open - 26 October 2008 A wet morning greeted the 10 visitors and 24 home sailors for the Iced Tankard Handicap open on 26 October at Hollowell. The rain soon cleared and the variable light to moderate westerly breeze provided interesting and challenging racing. The day was dominated by the Scorpion of Richard Adams and Steve Graham who won two of the three races, interrupted in the second race by Alastair and Bernadette McMillan's Lark. The day was run expertly by Martin Hudson and the Hollowell team who made best use of the available daylight with the last boats from race 3 coming ashore as darkness fell. This race also showed the disadvantage of Hollowell's average lap system in handicap racing as those boats not lapped by the leader suffered a very slow lap as the wind dropped, pushing them well down the fleet. All in all though an excellent day. Full Results here Junior Results here Lots of photos from Rob Eardley here

Warwick Trophy - 7 Sept 2008 An excellent days sailing between the teams of Hollowell, Northampton and Cransley resulted in the first ever tie for the trophy. The day was not without incident with the outcome dependant on the results of two protests. These were heard by a protest committee comprising a representative of each club who did not know the overall score. As it happened both protests were disallowed leaving the result a tie between Hollowell and Northampton, Hollowell comprehensively winning the fast fleet and Northampton equally comprehensively winning the slow fleet. Individual fleet winners were Fast Fleet - Alex and Bernadette McMillan (Lark, Hollowell) Slow Fleet - Andrew Bonsey (Solo, Northampton) It was mutually agreed that Hollowell would hold the trophy for 6 months and Northampton for 6 months. We all look forward to next year at Cransley.

Solo Open 22 June 2008 15 brave (or mad) Solo sailors arrived at Hollowell on Sunday 22 June despite the forecast for strong south westerlys. They were not disappointed as the f4/5 coupled with vicious gusts of up to 40mph and shifts tested the most expert helms. Every helm capsized at least once every race and the initial fleet of 15 with 10 finishing the first race dropped to only 4 finishing the second and only 6 starters in the last race. Steve Hall (Hollowell), sailing a Solo for only the second or third time showed how to handle the conditions finishing well ahead of the fleet in the first two races, even catching the lead lasers in the second race after giving them 5 minutes start! Jon Clarke (Draycote) persevered and with a 1st in the last race, which Steve sat out, claimed second spot with a gallant Andrew Smith also from Draycote in third. Full results here Laser Open 22 June 2008 9 Laser home sailors were looking forward to compete against 9 visitors at this year’s Laser Open at Hollowell Sailing Club in Northamptonshire. The entrants were met by strong South Westerlys, coupled with vicious gusts of up to 40mph. So many of the helms decided to start with Radial or 4.7 rigs, but 7 sailors were crazy enough to try their luck holding on to the Standard rig. So race tactics were less important and the key to success was “simply” staying upright and riding the gusts. Some of the sailors gave up enervated, even before they got to the first windward mark. But those who were experienced and lucky enough to handle the beats could also enjoy some fantastic scary beams. The initial fleet of 18 with 12 finishing the first race dropped to only 8 starters in the second race and only 4 finishing the last race. Steve Harper (Draycote) in a Laser Radial showed how to handle these challenging conditions and won the second and third race after a 3rd place in the first race. So he won overall, followed by David Harper (also Draycote) and John Leech (3rd) and Martin Hudson (4th) from Hollowell.

A great tribute to Roy that he was able to sail serenely through the conditions.
